In 2023, the 39th Annual Semiconductor Thermal Measurement, Modeling and Management Symposium (SEMI-THERM) happens on March 13-17 in San Jose, California, USA. SEMI-THERM is an international symposium that brings together experts in the field of electronic component characterization and thermal system management. The symposium offers a comprehensive overview of thermal issues from the level of integrated circuits to facilities. It allows thermal engineers, professionals, and industry leaders to engage in discussions and encourages sharing information on the latest academic and industrial advancements in electronics cooling.

For this event, Diabatix contributes to the Short Course session, which comprises a four-hour class training on topics ranging from thermal design & modeling to system-level validation testing. Ine Vandebeek, Head of R&D and Dr. Lieven Vervecken, CEO, are instructing the course "Fundamentals of CFD for Heat Transfer Analysis: Governing Equations, Numerical Methods, and Applications" on March 13th, from 8 AM to 12 PM.

The attendees will gain an in-depth understanding of the governing equations and numerical methods used in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) heat transfer simulations. The course will begin by introducing the fundamental heat transfer equations, including convection, conduction, radiation and conjugate heat transfer. Attendees will also learn about the Boussinesq approximation and its role in heat transfer simulations. The course will then delve into the various numerical methods used to solve heat transfer problems in CFD, including the finite volume method and will discuss different algorithms and solvers. Next, the multiple applications of heat transfer in CFD, including best practices for conducting simulations, will be addressed. The course will also introduce the basics of topology optimization and its application in heat transfer problems. The closure will happen with hands-on exercises centered on a 1D heat transfer problem, allowing participants to put into practice the theories and methods they have learned.

Dr. Lieven Vervecken will also be the speaker during the Technical Sections, a 15 min + 5 min Q&A presentation summarizing the design, tests, and findings of research and development efforts, on the topic "Generative Design and Experimental Validation of a CPU Cooler AI-Backed 3D Copper Design".
