Battery Show 2019 Interview With Our CEO | Diabatix

February 16, 2021
by
Lieven Vervecken

Lieven is CEO and co-founder of Diabatix. He has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in the field of numerical simulations, and has incorporated his expertise into the advanced AI technology that lies at the heart of Diabatix. With a passion for the limitless possibilities of combining engineering with artificial intelligence technology, he discusses here how his company is using AI to develop innovative cooling components for a variety of applications.

Please tell us about your current role. What are your key focus areas and responsibilities?

My primary role within Diabatix is business development. I’m constantly seeking and following up on opportunities for sustainable growth, of which there are many. We operate within a very exciting field. The demand for electronics is growing exponentially and so is the need for energy-efficient cooling. Our technology is designed to break through existing barriers in thermal design and to offer cooling performance improvements to customers who are active in a wide range of industries.

So part of my job is to make sure that companies across the globe get to know us and what our optimised designs can do for them.

Another key focus area of mine is investing in new, promising talent and growing our team. The best way to expand our business is to have staff on board who are experts at what they do. That’s why we hire internationally, so we can find the absolute best man/woman for the job.

What do you think sets your company apart from your competitors?

Diabatix develops designs of cooling components for a variety of applications: from aerospace to IT to even Formula 1. To achieve the best results, our expert engineering team is supported by in-house-developed, state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technology.

It’s this artificial intelligence technology, powered by supercomputers, that enables us to develop highly customised designs in a fraction of the time that thermal designs usually take. We are the only company in the world that applies this technique to cooling components, and our innovative, reliable and efficient way of doing business are clear to see in the steady growth of our customer base.

Are there any new technology developments that you are working on at the moment? Can you tell us about them?

One promising and exciting project that we are working on is cooling by means of natural convection. The traditional way of cooling a heat source is by means of pumping cold water or air through a heat sink with a ventilator, pump, etc. This cold air or water will take away the heat of the engine, battery, etc. The downside is that the ventilator or pump can degrade and needs to be maintained. With natural convection, the heated fluid surrounding the heat source will rise by itself, making way for the cooler fluid surrounding it to take its place. By extending our technology towards this type of cooling, we expand towards a whole new field of applications.
