Artificial intelligence is driving better cooling for critical EV components


The growing adoption of electric vehicles (EV) coupled with commercial demands is spurring the development of more powerful and long-lasting batteries. Between faster charging time, longer range, lower cost, and safety, the evolution of EV batteries is hot – in a both a literal and figurative sense. EV manufacturers must surmount the cooling barrier to achieve their goals, which means finding cooling solutions that account for thermal efficiency, temperature uniformity, size, weight, and cost. Similar cooling needs ring true for e-motors, as more power is making its way into the electric space, fast. In their pursuit, many cooling techniques have been explored, including air cooling, liquid cooling, and phase change materials, with liquid cooling claiming the title as today’s solution of choice for both EV batteries and e-motors as per its performance to weight and size ratio.

Lecture on air cooling


Cooling by air is very relevant in applications such as microprocessors, electronics or batteries. Traditionally, air-cooled heat sinks consist of multiple parallel fins. These designs are very simple, but do not harness the full cooling potential. In this lecture, Joris presents the solution of Diabatix, designed by our virtual engineer. Lecture on engine cooling


Engines are a preponderant heat source in both mobile applications and manufacturing machines. In this lecture, our Principal Developer Joris delves into the cooling of engines. The first engine he studies is the combustion engine of a bomber plane manufactured just before WWII. The second engine is an electric motor, which was used in a manufacturing line. Surprisingly, combustion engines are still cooled the same way today. Learn more in this short lecture.
